An tSnáthaid Mhór provides illustrated content for children of all ages and is a company limited by shares. It was established in 2005 as a result of husband and wife team, Andrew Whitson and Caitríona Nic Sheáin happening upon some wonderful and less well known Irish fairy tales in the Folklore Department of University College Dublin.

With their rich and poetic narrative and vivid imagery, the stories stirred the couple as they felt they had discovered jewels from their past which they now felt compelled to restore and present to a wider audience through a modern telling.

An tSnáthaid Mhór directly translated into English means ‘ The Big Needle,’ a poetic way of describing the dragonfly. The traditional beauty and fresh light of the dragonfly epitomises the ethos of this small independent publishing house. It’s shape, like a long needle weaving its way back and forth through the reed beds just as An tSnáthaid Mhór weaves new cloth of story from ancient threads of telling.

Whether old or new, An tSnáthaid Mhór celebrates all appropriate content for children and strives to convey its individual statements of innovation and modern design, moulding stories, tales and new characters that reach out to stir, satisfy and entertain in a way that is fresh, compelling and innovative.
